M: Travel Plans (homework)

[Assignment:  Research places you want to go on our trip in two different cities.  Write an essay to convince me we should go there.  Include 5 pictures – forget to tell them to save URLs from pictures for attribution.  Max turned this in on April 17]

Bologna

I think we should go to Bologna.  There are a lot of interesting things to see and eat.  Bologna is in the center of Italy, in the province of Emilia-Romagna is quite accessible by cars and trains to other cities.

Sights in Bologna

The city of Bologna is a great place to visit.  The University of Bologna is a cool thing to see. It is the oldest university in Europe, and was founded in 1088.  Bologna was known as a place of honor and learning during the Middle Ages.  Bologna has lots of covered arcades in the city.  That means that you can walk long distances in the without getting in the rain or sun or snow.  Bologna also has lots of tall towers.  Now many of them are leaning dangerously but you can still go climb up inside a couple of them and get a great view.  In the Renaissance times there were over 200 towers in the city for the rich people’s houses, now less than twenty remain. The sights of Bologna are worth visiting.

Food in Bologna

There are some special foods that come Bologna.  Ragu is a tomato based meat sauce that is really good with pasta; the sauce is also called Bolognese.  Mortadella is an Italian sausage that is spiced with pepper.  It gets its name from when it was made by grinding pork in a mortar and pestle.  It is so popular in Italy is also called “Boloney” named for Bologna.  Another typical food is tortellini served in broth.  The food in Bologna sounds quite good to me and I am looking forward to eating well there.

Rome

The twins Romulus and Remus founded Rome.  They were famous twins who were dumped in the forest by their father Mars the god of war.  They were adopted by a wolf and grew up to build the city of Rome.  Rome is located in center of Italy in he province of Lazio.  It is over 2000 years old and has many historic sites.

Sights in Rome

Some of the coolest things in Rome are the sights.  At the Coliseum you can see what it was like to attend a gladiator battle.  The basement of the Coliseum is a maze of tunnels and cage cells where they kept wild beast and slaves that fought to the death.  I am really glad I am not a gladiator because fighting to the death sounds like a bummer.  There were different seats in the coliseum for important people like the Emperor and his senators.  Slaves and women had the worst seats but tickets to the performances were free. Rome also has really great art.  There is a lots of famous Renaissance art to see like Michelangelo’s Pieta and the Sistine Chapel.  Rome was a very important city during the Renaissance because the Popes spent a lot of money as patrons to the best artists of that time.  I can’t wait to see the exciting sites in Rome.

  1. Max,
The towers are really tippy. How many do you plan to climb? If you do go up one, do tell what you can see from the top.

Your research into what to see and eat is a really great assignment. Now, I assume that you are going to give your readers part 2. Did you do and eat???

Hanging out in Rome! How good is that? The food is right up your alley, so I am sure you are enjoying it. Did you go to the Sistene Chapel yet?

It is so good to see that you all look rested from the long flight.

I love you all and can’t wait for the next installment in the Red Suitcase.

    Grandma
